Today I learned about the healing power of ho’oponopono. It is a Hawaiian practice for healing and forgiveness. The word itself roughly translates to correction.
Like many mantras and meditation itself, the fact that the word means correction makes sense. Many times people turn to mantras to correct their thinking. Not as is my/your brain is bad and must be fixed. But, more as in, I/you have been thinking negatively for far too long and there’s a better way to live.
Just like any mantra Ho’oponopono is very simple, but if done right, very powerful. At its most basic level, you simple repeat the following:
- I’m sorry
- Forgive me
- I love you
- Thank you
From what I’ve read the order doesn’t matter but I prefer this order. Repentance and forgiveness first, and then confirming love and ending with gratitude.
As you repeat these words several times you are thinking about yourself, a friend, a loved one, the planet, or anything in between.
For a more intense experience you can elaborate a little bit. Instead of just saying, “I’m sorry,” you could say, “I’m sorry [insert name here], I should have never done that.” And so on and so forth.
I did this during my morning meditation today and it truly was very relaxing and satisfying. I hope you try it out too!
